Flora Food Group Makes the Impossible Possible: Revolutionary Paper Tub Wins Highest Industry Honours

Amsterdam – 13 November 2024 – Flora Food Group B.V., global branded food champion, announces today multiple wins throughout the 2024 awards season, including the prestigious Overall Winner and Renewable Materials category award for its revolutionary paper-based packaging innovation at the European Packaging Awards. These follow other accreditations for the groundbreaking technology at the 35th Dow Packaging Innovation Awards and World Sustainability Awards.

This first-of-its-kind paper tub represents a significant breakthrough in sustainable packaging, offering a plastic-free, oil-resistant, and waterproof solution for plant-based spreads. Made from PEFC-certified paper fibers and verified by a leading European recycling company, the tub can be recycled alongside regular household paper waste after use.

David Haines, Group CEO of Flora Food Group, commented: "Several years ago, when we first proposed creating a paper pack for plant-based spreads, many said it couldn't be done. Today, as we accept these prestigious awards, we've proven that the impossible is possible. This innovation perfectly demonstrates Flora Food Group's commitment to delivering the next generation of delicious, natural and nutritious food that is more sustainable and more affordable than dairy equivalents."

Karina Cerdeira, Head of Packaging and Artwork at Flora Food Group, added: "This represents a pivotal moment in sustainable packaging design. Through four years of R&D and collaboration with our partners, we've created a solution that not only meets our rigorous performance standards but also aligns perfectly with our environmental commitments. The ability to produce a mono-material, fully recyclable package that can withstand the demands of food storage while being environmentally responsible is a game-changer for our industry."
The revolutionary packaging features:

  • Conventional Plastic Free Certification
  • Mono-material construction enabling full recyclability
  • Waterproof and oil-resistant properties
  • PEFC-certified sustainable paper sourcing
  • Paper-based tamper-evident feature

The innovation was developed through a four-year collaboration between Flora Food Group and industry partners including Footprint, MCC Verstraete, Pagès, and Emsur.

These awards come at a significant time for the company, which recently announced its evolution from Upfield to Flora Food Group, reflecting its enhanced focus on delivering the next generation of food and offering a compelling choice to consumers.
